Usain Bolt of Jamaica realises he has won the race with a World Record of 19.30 seconds.

    Equally the enlarging, focusing and exposure to the paper is managed by a computer using lasers or LEDs rather than a bulb. The following process is still very much the same with the paper being processed in chemical developer, followed by a bleech fix before a wash to remove the processing chemicals.

    A C-Type print very much has its origins in traditional photographic processes but is originated from a digital file rather than a negative. Though, obviously, some of our vintage images are from scans of negatives.

Tom Jenkins is a multi award winning sports photographer working for the Guardian and Observer.

We kick off with these wonderful photographs of tennis at Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club were taken during the tournament of summer 2017.

Tom said ‘I had seen images taken by some landscape photographers with infrared and had seen how it rendered colours especially greens in a unique fashion. Knowing Wimbledon was a sea of different greens from the grass to the clubhouse covered in in ivy I thought it might be interesting to see what might happen. I also wanted to show a place that is so a familiar to all of us in a very different almost surreal way.’

Tom has been a photographer for 25 years and among his iconic images is a famous picture of Usain Bolt winning his second gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic games which has rightly become one of the most indelible images of the early 21st century.

Tom considers his career highlights to include his attendance at six world cups and five summer Olympics.

Tom’s passion for sport started in the hope of becoming a sports star but finds himself on the working end of the lens rather than the performing side.

A student of the Documentary Photography course at Newport which he left in 1989, Tom spent some time freelancing before joining the Guardian and Observer in 1990 .

A book – ‘In the moment: The Sports Photography of Tom Jenkins’ celebrating the work of Tom was published in 2012.
